Millisecond Pulsars in 47 Tucanae

Abstract: A b s t r a c t . Recent observations of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, made with the Parkes telescope at a wavelength of 20 cm, have resulted in the discovery of nine new millisecond pulsars (MSPs), all in binary systems. The number of timing solutions available has risen from two to 14. These results will make possible a more detailed study of the cluster dynamics.

“…Figure 9 shows the observeḋ P/P ratios along with a model prediction of the probability of a given acceleration being observed. The observed points are consistent with these predictions, provided that the central velocity dispersion in the cluster is more than 12 km s −1 (Freire et al 2000). These results are already impressive.…”

“…Not only has the multibeam system allowed detection of more pulsars in 47 Tucanae, it has also given us a much higher detection rate on the previously known pulsars. This has allowed timing solutions to be obtained for a further 13 pulsars, giving us a much improved knowledge of the pulsar parameters (Freire et al 2000). This in turn makes possible a number of interesting studies of cluster properties.…”

“…Of the 15 pulsars with positions well determined by pulsar timing (Freire et al 2000), 11 correspond to nine sources in the ATCA image at 1.4 GHz. Pulsars G and I are separated by less than 0.2 and appear as a single point source.…”

“…This, and the pulsars' intermittent detectability, have made difficult the use of pulse timing analyses to determine pulsar positions. Pulse timing has so far yielded positions for only 15 of the 22 pulsars Freire et al 2000).…”
