Millimetre-wave radio for broadband local access

Abstract

Radio systems delivering broadband services will require significant amounts of spectrum, but as the microwave frequency bands become congested sights are beginning to focus on the as-yet under utilised millimetre-wave region. This paper discusses a number of systems that would utilise the potentially vast communications capacity and rapid frequency re-use available at these frequencies. New system concepts have been explored from a spectrum requirement point of view with the conclusion, that with careful system planning, they will be viable. The low cost technology that is needed before we can address the domestic market has also been discussed.
