Millimeter‐wave directional‐antenna beamwidth effects on the ITU‐R building entry loss (BEL) propagation model

Abstract: Assuming omnidirectional antenna reception, the ITU‐R recently developed a new propagation model on building entry loss (BEL) for 5G millimeter‐wave frequency sharing and compatibility studies, which is a simplified outdoor‐to‐indoor path loss model. Considering the utilization of high‐gain narrow‐beamwidth beamforming, the omnidirectional‐based ITU‐R BEL model may not be appropriate to predict propagation characteristics for directional beamforming scenarios. This paper studies the effects of beamwidth on the… Show more

“…L b and L a are the basic transmission loss and the additional loss, respectively. The effects of reflection, scattering, and diffraction are considered in the basic transmission loss, including clutter loss [27,28]. The additional loss comprises the feeder loss, the polarization loss, and BEL [29].…”

RISS k is selected by confirming the maximum value among all pixels' RISS k , l Here, the RISS k is a value obtained with the assumption that the whole interference signal is fully injected into the FWS receiver.…”

“…We developed a broadband 32 GHz measurement sounder capable of detecting multipath signals with time-and space-varying characteristics. For the configuration of the broadband measurement sounder, the 32 GHz millimeter wave radio frequency part (RF part) was combined with the existing intermediate-frequency part (IF part) and the baseband processing part (BB processing part) [12], [16]. The RF part with a bandwidth of 500 MHz operates at the center frequency of 32.4 GHz.…”

“…However, since the wavelength shrinks by an order of magnitude compared with the microwave, mmW suffers from greater attenuation [9], [11], [12]. Measurements showed the penetration loss of common building materials from 20 to 50dB [13], the diffraction loss over rooftop from 10 to 80dB [14], the rain attenuation with a few dB/km [15].…”
