Milagrito, a TeV air-shower array

Abstract: Milagrito, a large, covered water-Cherenkov detector, was the world's first air-showerparticle detector sensitive to cosmic gamma rays below 1 TeV. It served as a prototype for the Milagro detector and operated from February 1997 to May 1998. This paper gives a description of Milagrito, a summary of the operating experience, and early results that demonstrate the capabilities of this technique. : 95.55.Ka, 29.40.Ka, 95.85.Pw PACS

“…The TeV diffuse γ-ray emission from the Galactic Plane (Atkins et al 2005) and from the Cygnus region ) has been measured by Milagro, a water Cerenkov telescope surveying the northern sky at TeV energies (Atkins et al 2000(Atkins et al , 2003. The diffuse emission measured by Milagro is (7.3 ± 1.5 ± 2.3) × 10 −11 photons cm −2 sr −1 s −1 for E > 3.5 TeV in the region 40 o < l < 100 o (Atkins et al 2005).…”

“…To be more specific, if we choose the line N θ = 15, which seems well enough to meet the efficiency requirement, the first dot tells the average speed of the fast iteration algorithm-greater than 80 events per second for the shower with lg(N hit ) > 2. 6, nearly containing all the triggered events. The speed obtained in terms of required computing resources meets the specification of the LHAASO project.…”

“…The water Cherenkov technique has been widely used in ground particle detectors, such as the Milagro experiment [6] and its new generation facility HAWC [7], the Pierre Auger Observatory [8], and IceCube/IceTop experiments [9,10]. One of the properties of the water Cherenkov Fig.…”

“…Milagro was a water Cherenkov gamma-ray observatory (EAS type) sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range ∼ 50 GeV to 100 TeV. The observatory was located near Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA at latitude 35.9 • north, longitude 106.7 • west and an altitude of 2630 m, and was operational from 2000 to 2008 [12]. The Milagro detector had two components: a central rectangular 60 m × 80 m × 7 m reservoir filled with purified water and an array of 175 smaller outrigger (OR) tanks distributed over an area of 200 m × 200 m surrounding the reservoir.…”
