557 Aspergillus niger‐Stämme aus Bodenproben wurden nach LEOPOLD in 10 wöchentlichen Passagen über Citratmedium mit Hefewasser geführt. Mittels Gärversuchen (Bechergläser bei 8 cm hoher Schicht der Rübenmelasselösung) wurden 12 Stämme ausgewählt, die 60 bis 70% Citronensäure produzierten. Einer dieser Stämme wurde durch UV‐Bestrahlung in 146 Varianten aufgespalten, deren einige trotz großer Empfindlichkeit gegenüber der Zusammensetzung des Gärsubstrates unverminderte Gärleistungen zeigten. Durch erneute 5 Passagen wurde die Toleranzbreite wieder hergestellt und dadurch eine weitere Steigerung der Citronensäureproduktion erreicht. Insbesondere einer dieser Stämme eignete sich als Produktionsstamm für die Schalengärung. Nach den Ergebnissen dürften die aus einer A. niger‐Rasse isolierten Einsporenkulturen weitgehend einheitlich auf das Züchtungssubstrat reagieren.
