Migration-related land use dynamics in increasingly hybrid peri-urban space: insights from two agricultural communities in Bolivia

Abstract: This article investigates the impact of transnational labor migration on agriculture in urbanizing communities in Bolivia. Previous research shows that the characteristics of rural out-migration communities affect whether agricultural practices are intensified and improved. Using a mixed methods approach, two closely located peri-urban communities with distinct prerequisites for agricultural development are analyzed. This study shows weak migration-induced changes in agriculture and concludes that transnationa… Show more

“…Some studies (Gibson et al, 2011; Qin & Liao, 2016) report a net positive impact of migration and remittances on agriculture, while others (e.g. Jokinen, 2018) provide evidence for a negative impact. Li et al (2013) find that in China, migration and remittances result in a greater focus on capital‐intensive and more profitable fruit orchards, and a negative impact on labour‐intensive wheat production.…”

“…An evaluation of the effect of demographic, environmental, and socioeconomic variables on the land cover change between 2001 and 2010 for Mexican municipalities and biomes using secondary data was made by [30]. How transnational labor migration was affecting agricultural practices and land use in two-grain producing communities in Bolivia using mixed data was analyzed by [31].…”

“…However, some scholars oppose this view, suggesting that the external income from nonagricultural sources may have a positive influence on the farm and help to maintain arable land production (Pan et al, 2018; Xu et al, 2017). In such instances, NAI can be used to subsidise rural livelihoods and increase agricultural inputs, such as fertiliser, pesticide, and agricultural machinery (Caulfield et al, 2019; Chiodi et al, 2012; Gray & Bilsborrow, 2014; Jokinen, 2018; Liu et al, 2016), which eventually improves agricultural productivity and may therefore reduce ALA. Moreover, the middle‐aged and older adults are the mainstay of agricultural production in the countryside due to limited opportunities in the urban labour market (Xia & He, 2017), and most off‐farm labourers are young rural‐urban migrants who have no experience of agricultural production.…”
