Migration of non intentionally added substances from adhesives by UPLC–Q‐TOF/MS and the role of EVOH to avoid migration in multilayer packaging materials

Abstract: Polyurethane adhesives are commonly used to laminate multilayer packaging materials for food. Since these materials are in direct contact with the food, compounds could migrate from adhesive into it. For this reason, it is important to identify all the potential migrants and verify their migration. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry analyses and ChemSpider database are used to identify the potential migrants from polyurethane adhesives, and these techniques… Show more

“…The identification was confirmed by injection of the pure compound isolated from an adhesive. This lactone was also identified in other food packaging materials, and in all cases, the polyurethane adhesive was the source1718. Its structure suggests that it is most likely derived from adipic acid.…”

“…Besides, they can also contain impurities from raw materials or by-products as result of a side reaction between different ingredients. These substances are called NIAS (non intentioned added substances) (Felix et al, 2012;Isella et al, 2013) which are unknown by adhesive producers.…”
