“…The respondents were asked to indicate their level of agreement with the above statements on a 5-point Likert scale with the responses 'Very much agree', 'Somewhat agree', 'Half agree and half disagree', 'Somewhat disagree' and 'Very much disagree', where higher scores represented a higher level of agreement. Due to mainland China's social, cultural and economic connections with Hong Kong, it has been a significant relocation and migration destination for some people from Hong Kong, especially in recent years (Lam & Fong, 2022). Therefore, to identify possible differences related to the emigration destination, the intent to emigrate to mainland China was measured separately from the intent to emigrate to other international destinations.…”

“…Studies on interprovincial return migration in mainland China have found that improved economic conditions in people's hometowns, which were often less-developed cities and regions originally, were one of the major drivers of return migration from the bigger cities in mainland China(Miao et al, 2013;Xu et al, 2017). The social and economic opportunities and prosperity of Hong Kong have long been the major reason for mainland Chinese to move to Hong Kong through the various talent acquisition and migration admission schemes previously provided by the Hong Kong government(Lam & Fong, 2022).Consequently, one of the drivers of people's intention to move back to their place of origin in mainland China could be that Hong Kong is losing its dominant position as a leading city in the region, at least among other Chinese cities, and previous immigrants are finding fewer reasons to stay. In a similar vein, this result may imply that the Hong Kong government's plans to acquire more mainland immigrants to replenish the current population could be effective in the short term, as shown by the figures above.…”
