Editors' Note: The vast majority of psychological research on immigrants has focused on North America and Europe. Salas Schweikart and Hendricks go against this trend, first by comparing migration trends in the Global South with those in the Global North and second by examining immigrants in Chile in a regional context (most immigrants to Chile are from neighboring Latin American countries). The discussion reflects different layers of an increasingly diverse Chilean society, with the Indigenous Chilean population (e.g., the Mapuche) as the longest established but lowest status group. The long shadow of colonial traditions and values continues to influence the treatment of immigrants, depending on their perceived ethnicity and cultural similarity to the Indigenous Chileans. This discussion relates to Chapter 14 by Hopner and colleagues, who describe the discrimination against New Zealand immigrants of Indigenous origin in Australia.

El artículo analiza la crisis migratoria acontecida en la región de Tarapacá en Chile durante la pandemia de COVID-19, se tomó en consideración la perspectiva de los encuadres informativos que son utilizados por los medios de comunicación regional. El estudio se desarrolló desde una perspectiva cualitativa de investigación, mediante un análisis de contenido de las noticias sobre el desplazamiento de la población migrante hacia el norte de Chile, publicadas por cuatro diarios regionales chilenos durante 2020. Los resultados evidencian que el principal encuadre de las informaciones relacionadas con la problemática examinada es el de atribución de responsabilidad. Se concluye que el rol de las autoridades gubernamentales de carácter nacional, regional y local se transforma en el principal foco de atención de las noticias sobre los efectos humanitarios y sanitarios de la crisis.

A Framework to Understand Attitudes towards Immigration through Twitter

Understanding public opinion towards immigrants is key to prevent acts of violence, discrimination and abuse. Traditional data sources, such as surveys, provide rich insights into the formation of such attitudes; yet, they are costly and offer limited temporal granularity, providing only a partial understanding of the dynamics of attitudes towards immigrants. Leveraging Twitter data and natural language processing, we propose a framework to measure attitudes towards immigration in online discussions. Grounded in theories of social psychology, the proposed framework enables the classification of users’ into profile stances of positive and negative attitudes towards immigrants and characterisation of these profiles quantitatively summarising users’ content and temporal stance trends. We use a Twitter sample composed of 36 K users and 160 K tweets discussing the topic in 2017, when the immigrant population in the country recorded an increase by a factor of four from 2010. We found that the negative attitude group of users is smaller than the positive group, and that both attitudes have different distributions of the volume of content. Both types of attitudes show fluctuations over time that seem to be influenced by news events related to immigration. Accounts with negative attitudes use arguments of labour competition and stricter regulation of immigration. In contrast, accounts with positive attitudes reflect arguments in support of immigrants’ human and civil rights. The framework and its application can inform policy makers about how people feel about immigration, with possible implications for policy communication and the design of interventions to improve negative attitudes.
