Migration and Environment

Abstract: International audienceThe concept of environmental migrants occurs frequently in the policy debate, in particular with regard to climate change and the incidence of such migration in low-income countries. This article reviews the economic studies of environmentally induced migration. It includes recent empirical analyses that try to link environmental change to migration flows and the spatial distribution of population. A consensus seems to emerge that there is little likelihood of large increases in internati… Show more

“…A fourth concern relates to temperature-induced migration and unobserved farmer ability. Extensive literature has addressed how climate change and environmental stressors affect migration (Bohra-Mishra et al, 2014;Millock, 2015;Koubi et al, 2016;Dallmann and Millock, 2017). A relevant study is Bohra- Mishra et al (2014), which looks at temperature-induced migration and finds that temperatures over 25 C can lead to outmigration.…”

“…This paper contributes to a growing body of literature that studies adaptive development (Agrawal and Lemos 2015;Castells-Quintana et al 2018;Lemos et al 2013) and environmental migration (Millock 2015). While economic models have been developed to study migration, only recently have economists started to estimate the interactions between environmental change and migration.…”
