Primary headache and factors associated in university students: a cross sectional study

Introduction: Primary headaches, defined as disorders in themselves caused by independent pathomechanisms and not by other disorders, are prevalent in university students and considered one important health problems in the world. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of primary headaches and analyze associations with sociodemographic characteristics and the use of electronic devices by university students. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study analysis was carried out with a sample of 1,143 students of both genders who responded to the questionnaire on demographic, socioeconomic aspects, use of electronic devices, and on the primary headaches. Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, and Poisson regression were performed. Results: The overall prevalence of primary headache of 60.7%, being that, in relation to the type, 33.2% presented tension-type headache, 54.3% migraine, and 12.3% other types of headache. Regression analysis showed that female gender and income of up to two minimum wages were associated with primary headache and migraine type. The primary headache was associated with subjects of the white race; watching television and playing video games for more than 3 hours per day, for example. The sitting posture, semi-lying down, and distance from the eyes to the mobile phone and tablet longer than 20 cm were associated with primary headache and the three types of headaches. Conclusion: The results allow us to conclude that there is a high prevalence of primary headaches in college students and that socioeconomic factors related to the use of electronic devices are associated with the presence of primary headaches.

The main purpose of our review study was to estimate depression prevalence among Saudi Arabian medical students according to the published articles and try to reveal the main associated factors. A systematic search was performed through PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar databases. A review of 18 studies published between January 2010 and March 2019 was composed of the following selection of necessary articles approved by PICO (population, intervention, control, and outcomes) criteria. The prevalence of depression among medical students of Saudi Arabia ranged from 30.9% to 77.6% with a mean prevalence of 51.5%. Depression severity was evaluated by various questionnaires, so we summarized the extracted data and revealed that medical students tend to have moderate to severe depression to a greater extent than mild depressive symptoms (33.27% vs 29.9%). The findings of this review suggest a high incidence of depression among medical students and the influence of associate sociodemographic factors. Females are considered to be at a higher risk of depression. First-year medical students are the most susceptible to develop depressive symptoms. Smoking is strongly associated with depression severity. Marital status, eating habits, usage of stimulants, and sleep disturbances are within significant findings of our review study.

Headache is a very common condition worldwide and may have serious consequences on effective functioning of an individual. It may also lead to emotional consequences or may be a result of emotional burden. Psychiatric comorbidity is also very common among patients with headache. Objectives: The main aim of the study was to assess depression among patients presenting to neurosurgery OPD with chief complaints of headache. Study Design: Cross Sectional Study. Setting: Neurosurgery OPD of a Tertiary Care Government Hospital Mardan Medical Complex located in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Period: September 2018-February 2019. Material & Methods: Patients presenting to neurosurgery OPD of Mardan medical complex, Mardan with chief complaints of headache were included in the study. Demographic information sheet was used to obtain important demographic information. Informed consent form was filled and signed from each participant. Hamilton Depression rating scale was used to assess symptoms of depression among the participants. Results: Most of the study patients 93 (74.4%) had primary headache, while 32 (25.6%) had secondary headache. The results of the study found that highest prevalence of depression was present among patients with tension type headache (88 %) as compared to migraine (78 %) and secondary headache (84 %). Moderate depression was present among 32 % of the study population, while 28 % had severe depression. Conclusion: These findings suggest that depression is very common among patients with headache. Primary health care practitioners should assess for symptoms of depression for better management of the course and prognosis of the patients presenting with complaints of headache.
