Migraine-Related Vestibulopathy

Abstract: Migraine has been associated with specific vestibular disorders, including benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood and benign recurrent vertigo in adults. Migraine may also play a role in chronic nonspecific vestibulopathy. Because scant data exist that describe the clinical findings and vestibular function abnormalities in suspected migraine-related vestibulopathy, we reviewed the history, physical examination, vestibular tests (electronystagmography, rotational chair, posturography), and response to treatment… Show more

“…VM may occur at any age [ 16,14,30 ] with a reported female to male ratio between 1.5 and 5 to 1 [ 14,30,18,41 ]. Familial occurrence is not uncommon, probably based on an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance with decreased penetrance in men [ 47 ].…”

“…The clinical characteristics of VM have been elucidated by several large case series from specialized dizziness clinics [ 14,16,18,26,30,31,41 Head motion intolerance, íe imbalance, illusory motion and nausea aggravated or provoked by head movements, is a frequent additional symptom [ 14,30 ]. Visual vertigo, which is vertigo provoked by moving visual scenes [traffic, cinema] can be another prominent feature of VM [ 14,61 ].…”

“…6 Significant comorbidity of Ménière's disease, motion sickness, and benign paroxysmal vertigo with migraine have been reported. [7][8][9][10] There have been some studies on vestibular function in migrainerelated vestibulopathy, 11 however, little is known about vestibular function in those with migraines without manifested vestibulopathy. A computerized static stabilometry is a reliable and non-invasive technique to evaluate equilibrium function and is useful to quantify the vestibulospinal symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo or truncal ataxia.…”

“…All types of dizziness can be seen in patients with migraine and has been shown to be higher than in the general population [1,2]. Epidemiological studies suggest that co morbidity of migraine and vertigo is 4.5 % for women and 1.5 % for men [3].…”
