Midwifery students’ retention of learning after screen-based simulation training on neonatal resuscitation: a pilot study

Abstract: Simulation in medical education is widely used to teach both technical and non-technical skills. The use of tools such as screen-based simulation raises the question of their efficiency and the retention rate for knowledge and skills. In this study, we measured midwives’ retention of learning after screen-based simulation training on neonatal resuscitation. 14 midwifery students participated in this pilot study. They undertook two screen-based simulation sessions 2 months apart. Measurements included a knowled… Show more

“…Moreover, the results show that participants strongly endorsed growth mindset and weakly endorsed fixed mindset. Further, the findings show that HCPs largely enjoyed playing the game, which was also echoed in other computer-based simulations for neonatal resuscitation [ 46 , 47 ]. Together with the results regarding the use of terminology in the game, the findings suggest that HCPs appreciate the guided apprenticeship and realism of the simulator.…”

“…The ANTS system uses a set of 4-point Likert scales to rate observed behaviours in relation to these elements and categories in addition to providing space for open comments 19 20. Researchers have investigated the positive effects of interventions such as cognitive aids, mental practice and simulation interventions on improving ANTS 21 22…”

“…Rigorous testing showed that the ANTS behavioural marker system has a reasonable level of accuracy and reliability 18. Researchers have investigated the effect of interventions to improve ANTS, such as use of cognitive aid, mental practice and simulation interventions 20 21. In this context, measuring non-technical performance is paramount to ensuring the provision of safe, high-quality care.…”
