Midterm Outcomes of Sliding Distal Metatarsal Minimally Invasive Osteotomy to Treat Bunionette Deformity

Abstract: Background: Bunionette deformity is described as a painful bony prominence on the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal head. The present study prospectively assessed the clinical, functional, and radiographic outcomes of sliding distal metatarsal minimally invasive osteotomy (S-DMMO) used in a large series of patients with a midterm follow-up period. Methods: From December 2015 to December 2018, we evaluated 74 feet (57 patients). Radiologic (4-to-5 intermetatarsal angle, fifth metatarsophalangeal angle, the… Show more

“…Minimally invasive techniques involving the lesser metatarsals continue to grow in popularity. Neunteufel et al 1 reported a case series of 30 patients (31 feet) who underwent minimally invasive distal metatarsal metaphyseal osteotomy for metatarsalgia of ≥1 lesser metarsals 2-5 . All clinical scores (American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society [AOFAS] Forefoot Score, Foot Function Index, Foot and Ankle Outcome Score [FAOS], and visual analog scale [VAS] pain score) improved significantly at a mean follow-up of 15.5 months.…”

“…Del Vecchio et al 2 reported the results of a sliding distal metatarsal minimally invasive osteotomy for the correction of a bunionette deformity in 57 patients (74 feet). At a minimum follow-up of 30 months, all radiographic and clinical outcome measures improved, with 89.1% of patients rating the procedure as excellent.…”

“…In the world of percutaneous foot surgery, which is gaining ever more credence thanks to an increasing number of serious publications on a wide range of procedures, there is no doubt that the management of the bunionette is a fantastic way to start: as all the leading publications 3,[6][7][8]10 and subsequent one 4,9 unanimously testify. Their results are consistently excellent, the complication rate is particularly low and patients are delighted with their surgery.…”
