Midface-lift patient satisfaction: A 5-year follow-up study

Abstract: Context:Several studies showed, from the clinical point of view, the advantages of the various techniques and surgical approaches to obtain facial rejuvenation. A few studies have highlighted the satisfaction or not of patients who underwent a traditional facelift; however, a long-term follow-up study measuring patient satisfaction with midface-lift surgery has not been published yet.Aims:The aim of this study is to measure individual patient satisfaction with the midface lift, to find out from each patient hi… Show more

“…The durability of other surgical approaches to the midface has been explored in the literature. In a recent study conducted by Pascali et al, 11 the short-and long-term results of 2 midface lift techniques were evaluated using patient satisfaction questionnaires administered at 1 and 5 years postoperatively. The authors report that most patients remained satisfied with their appearance when surveyed at 1 and 5 years postoperatively and conclude that the effects of the midface lift persist over time.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] In addition, the durability of various midface lift approaches have also been explored, although outcome measures have largely been subjective and the duration of follow-up is limited. [9][10][11] The transtemporal preperiosteal midface lift is a single suture technique that permits elevation of the orbicularis oculi muscle and malar fat pad while allowing direct visualization and selective, partial disruption of the midfacial ligaments. The procedure is performed endoscopically and is associated with minimal morbidity.…”

“…Thirty-two percent of patients underwent an average of 7 rounds of injectable fillers prior to surgical intervention, with an average expenditure of $7000 on nonsurgical procedures. Longevity of midface lift approaches has been reported, although most outcome measures are largely subjective, citing high patient satisfaction and quality of life scores at up to 5 years follow-up [85,86] . A recent study described a series of 143 patients undergoing an endoscopic transtemporal approach, reporting a significant, objective improvement in midfacial height that persisted for up to 15 years [87] .…”

“…4 Even though moderate and severe cases require rhytidectomy for achieving adequate improvement, thus making midface lift and facelift still the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, there is an ongoing search for less invasive techniques, 5 as surgical invasiveness, potential complications and prolonged recovery time are always worthy of thoughtful consideration. 6 Fat, hyaluronic acid and other agents can all restore the lost malar volume but they are generally claimed to lack in structure, durability. 7 Alloplastic implants have been therefore advocated too for decades, but they are not suitable for every patient.…”
