The interconnection among heterogeneous sensors and data acquisition equipment in cyber-physical systems have profound significance in achieving adaptability, flexibility, and transparency. Various middlewares have been developed in cyber-physical systems to collect, aggregate, correlate, and translate system monitoring data. Existing middleware solutions are normally highly customized, which face several challenges due to the highly dynamic and harsh production environments. The data generated by sensors can only be shared by specific applications, which prevents the reusability of sensors. Moreover, the lack of uniform access to sensors causes high cost and low efficiency in application development. To address these issues, a resource-oriented middleware architecture called ROMiddleware was proposed, and three key enabling technologies including heterogeneous sensor modeling and grouping, open application programming interfaces development, and token-based access right control mechanism have been developed. Under the guidance of the key enabling technologies, a prototype of ROMiddleware was implemented and its performance was evaluated. Finally, two applications were developed to stress the significance of ROMiddleware. The results show that ROMiddleware can meet the requirements of data acquisition in cyber-physical systems.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology can automatically and inexpensively track items as they are moved through the supply chain. This can automate the whole updating and management system, thereby making the system work with a much smaller workforce and reducing the error that can occur because of interference by human beings. One of the major advantages RFID provides is that it does not require direct physical contact with the objects and also does not require the object to be placed in its ‘Line‐of‐ Sight’. This has given it an edge over other autoidentification systems, like bar‐codes. The recent proliferation of RFID tags and readers would require dedicated and very efficient middleware solutions that manage readers and process the vast amount of captured data according to the need of various applications. RFID middleware is the software sitting in between various RFID readers and the enterprise applications. Extracting meaningful information out of huge amount of scan data is a challenging task. In this paper we like to analyze the requirements and propose a design for such an RFID middleware. This paper demonstrates how to enable the middleware to handle a large amount of RFID scan data and execute business rules in real‐time. The conventional existing middleware solutions show dramatic degradation in their performance when the number of simultaneously working readers increases. Our proposed solution tries to recover from that situation also. One of the major issues for large scale deployment of RFID systems is the design of a robust and flexible middleware system to interface various applications to the RFID readers. Most of the existing RFID middleware systems are costly, bulky, non‐portable and heavily dependent on the support software. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) envisages a future in which digital and physical things or objects (e.g., smartphones, TVs, cars) can be connected by means of suitable information and communication technologies, to enable a range of applications and services. The IoT's characteristics, including an ultra largescale network of things, device and network level heterogeneity, and the large number of events generated spontaneously by these things, will make development of the diverse applications and services a very challenging task. In general, middleware can ease the development process by integrating heterogeneous computing and communications devices, and supporting interoperability within the diverse applications and services. Recently, there have been a number of proposals for IoT middleware. These proposals mostly addressed Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), a key component of IoT, but do not consider Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID), Machine to Machine (M2M) communications, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), other three core elements in the IoT vision. Taking a holistic view, in this article, we outline a set of requirements for IoT middleware, and present a comprehensive review of the existing middleware solutions against those requirements. In addition, open research issues, challenges and future research directions are highlighted.
