Middlebury German School

Abstract

PARADOXICALLY speaking, Middlebury's youngest venture is at the same time her eldest, as the German School of 1915 was the first of her famous segregated language schools. America has only just sufficiently recovered from war-time hysteria for Middlebury to rejuvenate her German school and to inspire the present generation of German instructors. The summer of 1931 found Middlebury's youngest offspring approximately forty strong. Both graduate and undergraduate students were well represented. All of these had some knowledge of German on which the degree of volubility depended. Including faculty and guests the group often approached sixty. Though a trip to Germany is by far the best way of learning the language and customs, Middlebury offers an excellent opportunity for teachers and students of German. Moreover, those who have been to Germany insist that there was less temptation to speak English in Bristol than in Germany itself.The German School is held in Bristol, Vermont, a town of about 2000, located twelve miles north of Middlebury. There is, therefore, no danger that the students will be tempted to speak French or Spanish; and if the plan for a demonstration school of local pupils is realized, Bristol merchants will in time be able to conduct their business on a two language basis. Although this typically New England town is situated in the Green Mountains, it is not isolated from the commercial world. It boasts several chain stores, a department store, a drug store, etc., where one may buy anything from postage stamps to hiking outfits. Band concerts are given on Tuesday evenings and moving pictures several times a week. Bristol Inn is always ready to accommodate guests of the school.The headquarters of the school is Bristol Inn Annex, which was built especially for the purpose. Here is found the social hall with its comfortable chairs and fireplace and collection of periodicals. Its pictures and books are gifts of the German government. It is equipped with radio, victrola, and visual instruction apparatus.
