Middle Weichselian marine sediments from eastern Kattegat, Scandinavia

Abstract: Foraminifera, pollen, lithology and radiocarbon dates from a core in the southern Kattegat provide a rare opportunity to obtain data relating to environmental conditions during the Middle Weichselian in the offshore Kattegat. This core is also correlated with an adjacent second core. Redeposited Eemian foraminifera and pollen occur in the Middle Weichselian sediments. This is interpreted as a result of reworking by an active Middle Weichselian ice present in, or advancing from, a northeasterly to easterly dire… Show more

“…Marine sediments, contemporary with those from PC 10-1 (Zone I, Skarumhede series), have been documented from most of northern Denmark (e.g. Knudsen 1976;Lykke-Andersen 1987), from Laser (Knudsen 1986), from the eastern Kattegat (Bergsten & Nordberg 1993) and possibly also from Anholt (Seidenkrantz 1993b) (Fig. 1).…”

“…The faunal characteristics of Zone A from Core PC 10-1 indicate that this zone equates to Zone I of the Skaerumhede series, Zone A from the Older Yoldia Clay of the Hirtshals Coast Cliff (Knudsen 1976;, 1987, and Zone 03:3 in a core from the eastern Kattegat (Bergsten & Nordberg 1993). The 14C dates of c. 36,000 and 31,500 BP ( Martinson et al 1987;Mangerud 1991).…”

“…Marine intervals from the Middle Weichselian are, however, registered in many borings in the entire Kattegat region, e.g. on Lzs0 (Knudsen 1986), on Anholt (Seidenkrantz 1993a), the eastern Kattegat (Bergsten & Nordberg 1993;Seidenkrantz & Knudsen 1993), the southernmost Kattegat (Nielsen & Konradi 1990) and also in onshore cores and outcrops in northern Zealand (Petersen & Buch 1974;Konradi 1992).…”
