The early Badenian in ter val in the Cen tral Paratethys realm is char ac ter ized by a ma jor ma rine trans gres sion into the Pannonian and Carpathian Foredeep bas ins. In the west ern part of the Pol ish Carpathian Foredeep, Badenian sed i men tation started gen er ally with con glom er ates (Dêbowiec For ma tion) pass ing into a thick suc ces sion of claystones and mudstones with rare sand stone interbeds (Skawina For ma tion). Pro files con tain ing a full se quence of lower Badenian strata are rel a tively rare, and are mainly known from bore holes. In this pa per, we pres ent new re sults on sam ples taken from such a bore hole (Kaczyce K2/07) lo cated near the town of Cieszyn. We fo cus on re con struct ing the chro nol ogy of the lower Badenian ma rine sed i ments at the be gin ning of the trans gres sion in the Carpathian Foredeep (lower Skawina Fm.) us ing radio-iso to pic dat ing (40 Ar/ 39 Ar) of a volcanoclastic layer (tuff and tuffite) and biostratigraphy of cal car e ous nannoplankton and foraminifera.The weighted mean 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age for sanidine sep a rates from the tuff pro vided an age of 14.27 ± 0.03 Ma. This age is con sis tent with the NN5 and MNN5a nannofossil zones de ter mined in this study. Our foraminiferal as sem blages show that the basal beds of the Skawina For ma tion up to the tuffites cor re spond to the Orbulina suturalis-Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone (ac cord ing to Cicha et al., 1975) and cover the in ter val of the Lower Lagenidae Zone-low er most Up per Lagenidae Zone (Grill, 1941). The petrographic data from the tuffite al low cor re la tion of the tuffite from the Kaczyce K2/07 bore hole to the level of the Che³mek Tuffite Bed (Alexandrowicz, 1997) pro vid ing a re gional cor re la tion ho ri zon for fu ture stud ies.

The mid-Langhian ("Badenian") flooding fully reconnected the semi-isolated Central Paratethys realm with the Mediterranean and, thereby, drastically changed the middle Miocene paleogeography of Central Europe. Due to the scattered stratigraphic record and scarcity of independent age constraints in some areas, the precise age and underlying mechanism are still debated. We present integrated chronostratigraphic data from five sections in the eastern part of the system to reconstruct the flooding event distal from the strait to the Mediterranean. By applying modern Mediterranean biochronology (planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils), supplemented by an 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age on a tuff, we demonstrate that the widespread open marine settings in the NW Transylvanian Basin were definitely installed after 14.9 Ma (MMi4d biozone), and in most areas before 14.4 Ma. In the marginal study area in the SE Carpathian Foredeep, fully marine conditions likely set in slightly later (14.6-14.4 Ma). There, short-lived marine incursions into the brackish environment occurred since the latest Burdigalian ("pre-flooding phase"). The new ages overlap with the flooding in the majority of the Central Paratethys (~ 14.9-14.4 Ma), and with marine overflow into the Black Sea (14.85 Ma). We suggest that the transgression was driven by subsidence of the Pannonian Basin, by creating accommodation space and diminishing barriers between sub-basins, but was likely enhanced by a global sea-level rise. Finally, we speculate that the scarcity of all calcareous material in the SE Carpathian Foredeep before the mid-Langhian flooding might be related to pulses of nutrient-rich brackish and low pH water from the neighboring Black Sea Basin.

Fossiliferous Middle Miocene deposits from the surroundings of Marija Bistrica (north-east of Zagreb) transgressively overly older pre-Cenozoic bedrocks. Fossils from shallow marine environments are in most cases preserved as bioclasts, while deep marine calcareous oozes characterize the pelagic marls. The age of the transgressive sequence is estimated on the basis of planktic biota from marls (foraminifera, nannoplankton and pteropods) as the Badenian NN5 Nannozone. The following palaeoenvironments can be distinguished or presumed on the basis of biota and sedimentary features: (1) beach characterized by polymictic conglomerates with rhodolith-rich carbonate matrix; (2) oyster banks, recognized from secondarily found oyster clusters; (3) lagoons marked with compact bioclastic deposits and rhodolith-halimeda assemblage; (4) patch-reefs recognized from the surrounding bioclastic deposits; (5) shallow subtidal mäerl beds preserved as loose bioclastic deposits and (6) distal slope argillaceous marls with pelagic biota. Palaeoenvironmental analyses indicate rapid drowning, most probably corresponding to the transgression during the Middle Badenian TB 2.4 3rd order transgressive-regressive sequence.
