Pollen records from lacustrine sediments of deep basins in the Colombian Andes provide records of vegetation history, the development of the floristic composition of biomes, and climate variation with increasing temporal resolution. Local differences in the altitudinal distribution of present-day vegetation belts in four Colombian Cordilleras are presented. Operating mechanisms during Quaternary Ice-Age cycles that stimulated speciation are discussed by considering endemism in the asteraceous genera Espeletia, Espeletiopsis and Coespeletia. The floristically diverse lower montane forest belt (1000-2300 m) was compressed by ca. 55% during the last glacial maximum (LGM) (20 ka), and occupied the slopes between 800 m and 1400 m during that period. Under low LGM atmospheric p CO 2 values, C 4 -dominated vegetation, now occurring below 2200 m, expanded up to ca. 3500 m. Present-day C 3 -dominated paramo vegetation is therefore not an analogue for past C 4 -dominated vegetation (with abundant Sporobolus lasiophyllus).Quercus immigrated into Colombia 478 ka and formed an extensive zonal forest from 330 ka when former Podocarpus-dominated forest was replaced by zonal forest with Quercus and Weinmannia. During the last glacial cycle the ecological tolerance of Quercus may have increased. In the ecotone forests Quercus was rapidly and massively replaced by Polylepis between 45 and 30 ka illustrating complex forest dynamics in the tropical Andes.

2,3 Een oude grap zegt dat iedereen over het weer praat, maar er niets aan dóet. Opmerkelijk genoeg gaat dit niet op voor het klimaat: sommigen menen dat we het klimaat via beleidsmaatregelen kunnen beïn-vloeden.Klimaatverandering heeft potentieel grote maatschappelijke en economische gevolgen. 4 Daarom is een goed begrip van ons klimaat, en hoe dat kan veranderen, potentieel van groot belang. Maar het klimaatvraagstuk heeft een merkwaardig karakter: zolang de maatschappij nog geen knellende nadelen ervaart, én op onze onwetendheid over het CO 2 vraagstuk zelfs een geheel nieuwe economie is gebouwddie van de virtuele handel in CO 2 -blijft het klimaatvraagstuk meer het domein van economen, politici en natuurbeschermers dan van klimaatwetenschappers. Het wordt hoog tijd dat we wat méér over ons klimaat te weten komen: over het kader waarin die veranderingen kunnen plaatsvinden, hoe snél een klimaatverandering kan gaan, welke drijvende krachten de oorzaken ervan zijn, welke mechanismen een rol spelen bij die verandering en hoe natuurlijke ecosystemen daarop reageren.

The environmental changes and the dynamics of the savanna-forest mosaic, over the last 1050 years, have been reconstructed by pollen, charcoal, radiocarbon dating mineralogical and geochemical analyses of sediment cores taken from three different Mauritia flexuosa palm swamps in the northernmost part of the Brazilian Amazon region (northern state of Roraima). Studies on the relationship between the modern pollen rain and the regional vegetation provide additional information for the interpretation of the fossil pollen records. The fossil pollen assemblages and geochemical results indicate relatively wet climatic conditions throughout the recorded period. Despite these moist conditions, fires were frequent and are one of the reasons for the dominance of a grassy savanna instead of forest expansion in the study area. Considering the generally wet climatic conditions, these fires were most likely caused by human activities. Even today, fires hinder forest expansion into savanna areas. Sandy hydromorphic soils may also act as an edaphic control to maintain the current sharp boundary between forest and savanna ecosystems.
