Microwave tomography using dynamic 802.15.4 wireless networks

Abstract: We demonstrate tomographic imaging of room-sized spaces using the propagation properties of 2.4GHz, IEEE 802.15.4 Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio waves. We have successfully imaged dielectric phantom objects of the order of the RF wavelength (12.5 cm) in a wireless ZigBee network using only received signal strength indicator (RSSI) data. The Microchip ZigBee stack is utilized to provide an application layer program to control the network and provide an outlet for network data. Using the data colle… Show more

“…RF tomography is a process of inferring information about an environment by capturing and analysing RF signals transmitted between nodes in a wireless sensor network. In 2007, tomographic imaging of room-sized spaces using the propagation properties of 2.4GHz, IEEE 802.15.4 Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio waves had been demonstrated in [16]. Instead of analysing data located in the payload of packets, the network itself was used as a dynamic sensor to collect data.…”

“…In the context of wireless tomography, it seems that only two groups, [14]- [16] and [17], have conducted research on incoherent tomography. In the following, the availability of phase information, is used for classification in the literature.…”
