Microwave Synthesis and Optical Properties of Uniform Nanorods and Nanoplates of Rare Earth Oxides

Abstract: We report on the rapid production, characterization, and spectral properties of uniform nanorods, nanowires, and nanoplates of rare earth oxides (M 2 O 3 , M ) Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy). The method developed, based on microwave irradiation (MWI), allows the control of the size and shape of the rare earth oxide nanostructures by varying the MWI reaction time and the relative concentrations of the organic surfactants. The uniformity of the rods and of the wires is demonstrated in their spontaneous assembly int… Show more

“…Gadolinium oxyhydroxide is a stable phase obtained by the thermal dehydration of gadolinium hydroxide and has a simple layered structure. So, these materials have been investigated as promising candidates in the field of high throughput luminescent devices, catalysis and other functional devices based on their excellent electronic, optical and physicochemical responses arising from 4f electrons [5][6][7] .…”

“…Selective adsorption of organic surfactants can effectively inhibit the growth of the nanocrystal in all but the favorable crystallographic plane where the growth is significantly enhanced, thus resulting in a 1D structure. 15 Microwave irradiation has been used to accelerate the preparation of inorganic 1D and 3D hierarchical nanostructures. 16 -21 Ultrasound waves radiate through the solution causing alternating high and low pressures in the liquid medium.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Nanotubes may be formed from a variety of materials including carbon, ceramics, metals and organic polymers. [6][7][8][9] The organic polymer nanotubes possess high resistance to chemical and structural imperfection and nice ability to form ordered films, and thus have attracted increasing interests in recent years.…”
