Microwave spectrum and molecular structure of PNO

Abstract: The microwave spectra of P 14 N 16 O and its isotopomers P 15 N 16 O and P 14 N 18 O were observed in a dc glow discharge plasma of a mixture of nitric oxide and hydrogen gases over solid red phosphorus placed on the stainless steel electrode. Rotational transitions of the parent P 14 N 16 O species were measured in the ground state as well as in the vibrationally excited 1 ͑PN str.͒, 2 ͑bend͒, and 2 2 states. The lϭ0 substate of the 2 2 state interacts with the 1 state through a Fermi resonance. The rotationa… Show more

“…The addition of P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 to a CD 2 Cl 2 solution of 3 led to immediate and exclusive formation of the known [26] triphosphenium ion [P(P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ) 2 ] + (for spectra, see the Supporting Information). In this case, [P 4 NO] + acts as a pure "P + " donor, which points to the loss of neutral species, for example, PNO, [22,27,28] which was also observed in the mass spectrum. This result shows the promising versatility of [P 4 NO] + as synthetic tool, perhaps leading to other interesting phosphorus cations.…”

“…9 Subsequently, the diode laser spectrum of the 1 band of PNO was obtained. 12 Sun et al 13 examined the triplet states of PNO and its isomers and prediced that cyclic structures should be found. The enthalpies of formation at 298 K of solid ͑PON͒ are −88.8Ϯ 1.1 and −85.1Ϯ 1.0 kcal/ mol for the ␤-cristobalite and amorphous forms, respectively.…”

“…However, the centrifugal distortion constant changes by over +10% on vibrational excitation, compared to +2% and −2% for the corresponding bands in OCS and N 2 O respectively. As shown by Okabayashi et al (5), the change in D drops to +0.5% when Fermi interaction is taken into account. A careful search was made for lines of the 2ν 2 band between 880 and 910 cm −1 but without success.…”
