Microwave photonics cross-connect repeater for telecommunication satellites

Abstract: The proof-of-concept demonstration of a microwave photonic cross-connect for future telecom satellite repeaters is reported. The system includes optical distribution of a high-purity local oscillator at 26 GHz, frequency downconversion from 30 to 4 GHz, and MEMS-based optical cross-connection of microwave signals.

“…Recently, some technologies for microwave photonic frequency conversion have been reported. ESA GSTP [4][5] carried out microwave photonic frequency down-conversion, in which the RF frequency signal converted from Ka band (28-31GHz) down to C band (3-5GHz) with MZM and optical LO (local oscillator). Test result shows that the RF performance can be compatible with the implementation of repeaters at large scale with an attractive number of beams.…”
