Microwave Discharge Electrodeless Lamps. Part VIII: Continuous On‐Site Solar Energy Remediation of Contaminated Water

Abstract: Microwave discharge electrodeless lamps (MDELs) have been examined for continuous on-site field treatment of contaminated water using solar cells to provide the necessary electrical power. The equipment aimed to decontaminate water in areas impacted by natural disasters such as the extensive earthquake that hit Eastern Japan in 2011. An energy-saving semiconductor microwave generator provided the microwaves to activate the MDELs in a microwave/UV reactor setup operated using a single-mode applicator and an E/H… Show more

“…Solar photochemistry also offers economic benefits for decentralized manufacturing, for example small-scale conversions of local biomass in the (tropical) essential oil industry or in developing countries [ 128 , 129 ]. In isolated and remote locations, photovoltaic (PV) panels can provide power for electrical components, as again successfully demonstrated for water treatment applications [ 130 , 131 ].…”

“…Such "solar driven solar reactors" have been pioneered for water detoxification applications. 183 A compact flow-through reactor module with solar-driven microwave discharge electrodeless lamps (MDLEs) and peristaltic pumps has likewise been developed by Horikoshi et al 184 The unit is designed for disaster relief and was successfully tested for the treatment of contaminated water.…”

“…Our research efforts reported previously have focused on novel MDELs that use advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) toward water treatment and air purification [6,8,9]. In some cases, these MDELs contained traces of mercury that posed some concerns to the environment with regard to Hg-toxicity exposure in the form of organic and inorganic mercury.…”
