In the past few years, great effort has been devoted to the fabrication of highly efficient, broadband radome and stealth (R&S) structures for distinct control, guidance, surveillance and communication applications for airborne platforms. The evaluation of non-planar aircraft R&S structures in terms of their electromagnetic performance and structural damage is still a very challenging task. In this article, distinct measurement techniques are discussed for the electromagnetic performance and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of R&S structures. This paper deals with an overview of the transmission line method and free space measurement based microwave measurement techniques for the electromagnetic performance evaluation of R&S structures. In addition, various conventional as well as advanced methods, such as millimetre and terahertz wave based imaging techniques with great potential for NDE of load bearing R&S structures, are also discussed in detail. A glimpse of in situ NDE techniques with corresponding experimental setup for R&S structures is also presented. The basic concepts, measurement ranges and their instrumentation, measurement method of different R&S structures and some miscellaneous topics are discussed in detail. Some of the challenges and issues pertaining to the measurement of curved R&S structures are also presented. This study also lists various mathematical models and analytical techniques for the electromagnetic performance evaluation and NDE of R&S structures. The research directions described in this study may be of interest to the scientific community in the aerospace sectors.

Advanced composite materials are being used extensively in many commercial and military aircraft and rotorcraft due to their superior stiffness and high strength-to-weight ratio. These composites are subjected to unexpected environmentally assisted damages. This work covers exploration and the methodology of detection of two such types of damages -galvanic corrosion and impact damages, at the earliest stages of development.When aluminum alloy and CFRP are coupled together, the structural strength of the aircraft is unparalleled, but this comes at a price, namely galvanic corrosion (GC). Previous experimental results have shown that when CFRP composite materials are joined with high strength aluminum alloys, galvanic corrosion occurs at the material interfaces, and the aluminum is in great danger of corroding.Composite materials used in aircraft are often subjected to unexpected environmental impact loads at high speeds, such as bird strikes and hailstone impacts. The damages developed in such cases is primarily in the form of delamination and matrix cracking, known as barely visible impact damage (BVID), since they are not easily observable by the naked eye. Prediction and detection of such environmental damages, which can occur in the service life of the aircraft, are of paramount importance in the aerospace industry.This work utilizes the software BEASY for the prediction of galvanic corrosion and utilizes ABAQUS Explicit for modeling the bird impact damage and the hailstone impact damage by using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) modeling method. This work also proposes a non-invasive microwave nondestructive testing (NDT) technique that can be employed as a detection methodology to detect the aforementioned types of environmentally assisted damages. Radar signals operating at a set frequency range can be used to detect the aforementioned environmentally assisted damages to obtain high-resolution 2D images of such damages.

Detection of corrosion precursor pitting on metallic surfaces under various coatings and on bare metal is of keen interest in evaluation of aircraft fuselage. Near-field microwave nondestructive testing methods, utilizing open-ended rectangular waveguides and coaxial probes, have been used extensively for detection of surface flaws in metals, both on bare metal and under a dielectric coating. This paper presents the preliminary results of using microwave techniques to detect corrosion precursor pitting under paint and primer, applique and on bare metal. Machined pits of 500 um diameter were detected using open-ended rectangular waveguides at V-Band under paint and primer and applique, and on bare metal. Using coaxial probes, machined pits with diameters down to 150 um on bare metal were also detected. Relative pit size and density were shown on a corrosion-pitted sample using open-ended rectangular waveguides at frequencies of 35 GHz to 70 GHz. The use of Boeing's MAUS™ 1 scanning systems provided improved results by alleviating standoff variation and scanning artifact. Typical results of this investigation are also presented.
