Microwave-assisted hydrodistillation of essential oil from rosemary

Abstract: Effects of microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and conventional hydrodistillation (HD) methods on yield, composition, specific gravity, refractive index, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis L were studied. The main aroma compounds of rosemary essential oil were found as 1,8-cineole and camphor. Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) values for essential oils extracted by MAHD and HD were 1.52 mM/ml oil and 1.95 mM/ml oil, respectively. DPPH rad… Show more

“…The in‐situ MW assisted extraction (MWHD) of rosemary EO obtained a yield of 0.4 % (w/w) after an irradiation time of 30 min. This result is comparable with the yield and extraction time described in the literature which ranges from 0.3 % to 0.6 % (yield weight percentage) using a MW irradiation time from 10 to 75 min in conventional oven‐type reactors. Hydrodistillation (HD) using conventional heating was also performed as a reference method of essential oil extraction.…”

“…The rosemary EO extraction process assisted by MW has been widely investigated using a Clevenger apparatus coupled to MW oven‐type devices . The MW extraction approach plays an important role in the yield, extraction time and chemical composition .…”

“…Similar to our findings, Tigrine‐Kordjani et al () reported that the time needed for achieving the same extraction yield with HD was 6 times greater than that of SFME (Tigrine‐Kordjani et al, ). Also, Karakaya et al () reported that MAHD can reduce the extraction time of Rosmarinus officinalis L. EO by approximately 65% in comparison with HD (Karakaya et al, ).…”

“…The microwave oven was operated at 600 power level for a period of 30 min which no more essential oil was obtained. The extracted essential oils were collected, dehydrated with anhydrous sodium sulfate and kept in a sealed dark vials at 4 °C (Karakaya et al, 2014).…”
