Microwave assisted functionalization of carboxylated‐multiwalled carbon nanotubes with 5‐aminoisophthalic acid and its application for the preparation of chiral poly(ester‐imide)/CNT nanocomposites

Abstract: This article presents the results of investigation into surface modification of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)s by 5-aminoisophthalic acid under microwave irradiation as a fast, safe, and simple method. The different contents of functionalized MWCNTs (5, 10, 15 wt%) were effectively dispersed in an aromatic polymer through ultrasonic irradiation to prepare MWCNT reinforced polymer nanocomposites (NC)s. The chiral poly(ester-imide) (PEI) was prepared by a direct polycondensation of chiral dia… Show more

“…LOI, the minimum concentration of oxygen for combustion of a polymer, was used for characterizing the flammability tendency of materials and calculated based on van Krevelen and Hoftyzer equation. Due to the linear relationship between LOI and char yield, macromolecules with LOI above 21% were classified as self‐ extinguishing polymers (Oxygen concentration in ambient air is 21%) . LOI=17.5+0.4 CR where CR = char yield.…”

“…For all NCs, LOI were calculated and it could be seen obviously that incorporation of ZnO‐PVA NPs considerably increased LOI values and flame retardancy potential of PVC NCs .…”

“…The formed product was placed in polyamideimide, in the presence of dimethylacetamide, for 24 h at 30–40 °C, to yield MWCNTs that had an increased dispersibility and solubility, compared to pristine MWCNTs. It was reported that oxidized MWCNTs placed in 5-aminoisophthalic acid, in the presence of microwave irradiation up to 700 W, for 15 min at 120 °C, formed an amide bond compound ( Figure 6 e) [ 55 ]. The resulting product had a highly stable covalent bond between the carboxylic group of MWCNTs and the free amino group of aminoisophthalic acid and a decreased the aggregation propensity, compared to unmodified MWCNTs.…”
