Microwave-Assisted Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass for Hydrocarbon Production with Physically Mixed MCM-41 and ZSM-5

Abstract: To delve into the law of hydrocarbon production in microwave-assisted catalytic fast pyrolysis (MACFP) of corn straw, physical mixed Mesoporous Crystalline Material-41 (MCM-41) and Zeolite Socony Mobile-5 (ZSM-5) catalyst prototypes were exploited in this study. Besides, the effects exerted by temperature of reaction and MCM-41/ZSM-5 mass ratio were explored. As revealed from the results, carbon outputs of hydrocarbons rose initially as the temperature of MACFP rose and reached the maximal data at 550 °C; subs… Show more

“…Table 7 also includes the results of a confirmatory experiment performed under these optimum conditions. The experimentally obtained hydrocarbon yield (y₄) was higher than that achieved in all runs of the central composite design (CCD) (Table 5) and in most of the results reported in the literature for biomass pyrolysis [29,33,84]. This result confirms the high quality of the bio-oil obtained from the MAP under these optimum conditions.…”

“…For example, although the moisture content of biomass can improve the overall efficiency of microwave radiation energy absorption [28], a very high moisture content can impair the bio-oil quality [29][30][31]. Most of the studies employing MAP used a biomass moisture content lower than 16% (wet base) [32][33][34][35]. Nonetheless, it is still a challenge to find the best moisture content in order to improve the yield and quality of pyrolysis products.…”

“…Mesoporous Al/MCM-41 has also been used in combination with microporous ZSM-5 for biomass pyrolysis and MCM-41 was observed to obstruct coke development on ZSM-5, while both helped each other in improving the yield [24,25]. Ratnasari et al [26] studied the kinetics of biomass pyrolysis over a mixture of H-ZSM-5 and Al/MCM-41 and noted a decrease in the activation energy of the reaction in the presence of a catalyst.…”
