“…Given that MWA can create a larger ablation zone, MWA alone or combined with TACE has increasingly been used in treating large HCC [76,77,78]. Abdelaziz et al [78] recently performed a study to compare the efficacy and safety of percutaneous MWA with TACE for large tumors (5-7 cm) and demonstrated better results for MWA than TACE in managing large HCC lesions.…”

“…Abdelaziz et al [78] recently performed a study to compare the efficacy and safety of percutaneous MWA with TACE for large tumors (5-7 cm) and demonstrated better results for MWA than TACE in managing large HCC lesions. Another retrospective study [77] compared the outcomes of TACE combined with MWA (TACE-MWA) with TACE for treating unresectable large HCC (≥5.0 cm in diameter).…”

“…Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS)-guided MWA was performed by Liu F et al [40] in 107 patients with large HCCs (mean maximum diameter: 19.5 ± 8.5 mm) with a technical success rate of 98.13 %. Regarding comparative evaluation of MWA vs. transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in large HCCs, Abdelaziz et al analyzed 64 patients with large HCCs [41]. MWA showed higher rates of complete ablation (75 %) with fewer sessions and a lower incidence of tumor recurrence (p = 0.02) with 13.7 months of survival.…”

“…Sixty-four patients were divided into two groups and treated with either MWA or TACE. A higher rate of complete ablation (75%) was achieved with fewer sessions of MWA than of TACE, and MWA displayed a lower incidence of tumor recurrence, de novo lesions, or post-treatment ascites [69] . Though several initial studies have shown favorable results with cryoablation, many recent studies have raised concerns regarding serious side effects and complications associated with this technology, including cryoshock, hypothermia, cracking of the ice ball, hemorrhage, biloma, abscess, pleural effusion, and death [70,71] .…”
