Microwave Ablation Antenna for Functional Adenomas in the Adrenal Gland

Abstract: Microwave thermal ablation has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades. However, new challenges for this technology are nowadays represented by specific applications. The present work investigates a promising ablative solution for the treatment of functional adenomas in the adrenal gland. A numerical study conducted to build and test an optimized internally cooled triaxial antenna will be presented. The antenna has been designed to minimize its transversal dimension merging radiating and cooling eleme… Show more

“…In the used applicator, back-heating along the antenna axis is limited only by the active cooling that balances the temperature increase. Thus, such increase in the longitudinal direction would be expected, but could be easily minimized adopting a different antenna design [33,34].…”

“…Thus, the anemia status of both groups was significantly improved after treatment. However, the relationship between vitamin D and anemia has not been elucidated, indicating the need for further investigations in this area [23,24]. Uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism usually affects multiple organs in patients, and PTH has a significant negative impact on cardiac function in patients.…”

“…The triaxial monopole applicator was placed parallel to the interface between the fat and the adrenal cortex. The antenna was operated at 30 W and 60 W for 60 s. The applicator was designed as described in [ 16 ]. The overall diameter of the applicator is 2 mm.…”
