Microvasculature of the Stria vascularis in the Round Window Area in the Rat

Abstract: This paper reports the results of a scanning electron microscopy study of corrosion cast preparation of the vessels in the cochlea of the rat. This method confirms the general findings about the cochlear vascularization, but also gives the opportunity to study the detailed pattern of the vascular supply of the stria vascularis in the round window area. The basal end of the stria vascularis has a remarkably different vascular anatomy compared with the other areas of the cochlea. The possible role of the vessels… Show more

“…This high-tone region has a different vascular anatomy in comparison to the other coils of the cochlea and this vulnerable area is predisposed to inner ear traumata [8], In the middle-ear surgery HFA can be a sensitive monitor to evaluate the postopera tive results [7], This study has demonstrated the value of HFA in monitoring pre-and postoperatively the hearing function after stapes surgery. The overall mean loss in high frequencies in this study after stapes surgery was 8.7 dB SPL.…”

“…The method provides the opportunity to view the overall picture of the capillary structures of the cochlea and the peripheral vestibular organ. We have applied this research method for our anatomical studies on the inner ear vessels of the rat [10][11][12][13]. The rat is commonly used as an experimental animal in studies on hearing research.…”

“…Although the vascu lature of the peripheral vestibular organ has been studied by conventional light micros copy in the human, the guinea pig, rat and other animals [1][2][3][4], the detailed architec ture of the vessels in their three-dimensional relationship is ambiguous because of the limited depth of light microscopy. The co chlear vascular architecture of the rat has recently been demonstrated three-dimensionally using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the corrosion casts [5][6][7], In this study, the authors morphologically investi gated the normal structures of the microves sels of the crista ampullaris in a three-dimen sional way in rat.…”
