Microstructured Reactors in Heterogenous Catalysis

Abstract: A number of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, mainly gas-phase reactions, have been performed previously at a laboratory scale and a successful proof of concept was achieved. Since the beginning of this century, there has been a shift in focus on the transfer from laboratory scale to production scale. In particular, this review deals with the technical concepts and economic aspects involved in such a shift. Heterogenously catalyzed gas-phase and liquid-phase processes are discussed separately. The preparati… Show more

“…Two different reactor concepts have been introduced: wall coated and packed-bed reactors [5]. Whereas wall coated reactors offer an optimized heat transfer due to the direct contact between reactor wall and catalyst layer, lFBR enable much higher catalyst loadings per reactor volume, the possibility to use commercial catalysts, and an easier exchange of deactivated catalyst [6,7]. A disadvantage often named in conjunction with lFBR is the pressure drop caused by the packed bed.…”

“…The heat produced in the catalytic layers adjacent to the cooling channels can be directly evacuated, facilitating isothermal reaction, whereas overtemperatures can be supposed in the catalytic walls adjacent to the reaction channels. Therefore, slit-type channels with a very small H/W ratio are advantageous [13].…”
