Microstructure of Ethene/Norbornene Copolymers

Abstract: The microstructure of ethene/norbornene copolymers produced by metallocene/methylaluminoxane catalysts is investigated by 13 C NMR spectroscopy. The microstructure of alternating copolymers is assigned on the pentad level by comparison of the pentad distribution in 13 C NMR spectra with the calculated distribution according to the alternating mechanism. Norbornene block structures produced with different catalysts are compared, and norbornene diblock structures are assigned. Triad distributions for the alterna… Show more

“…The structure of these copolymers has been extensively studied using 13 C high resolution in solution [5][6][7]. It was found that in copolymer with low NB content the close vicinity of two or more NB groups is rather rare.…”

“…However, the regions in which the resonances most probably appear, can be defined on the basis of the measured NMR spectra and of the known carbon resonances of ethylene-norbornene copolymers. [23][24][25] The carbon resonance regions of poly(ethylene-co-BHMCZ) are presented in Table 2. The regions are designated by letters A-G in the 13 C DEPT and 1 H-13 C HXCO NMR spectra (see Figure 3b and 6).…”

“…Reports on both their synthesis and microstructure analysis [2][3][4][5][6][7] have appeared in the last several years. In most papers, the characteristics of the copolymerization reaction are described in terms of the relation between catalyst structure and/or copolymerization conditions on the one hand and the Full Paper: Copolymers of ethylene (E) with norbornene (N) were synthesized using the catalysts rac-Et(Ind) 2 ZrCl 2 / MAO (1), 90%rac/10%meso-Et(4,7-Me 2 Ind) 2 ZrCl 2 /MAO (2), and rac-H 2 C(3-t-BuInd) 2 ZrCl 2 /MAO (3).…”
