Microstructure modelling and prediction of effective elastic properties of 3D multiphase and multilayer braided composite

Abstract: This paper is focused on the microstructure modelling and evaluation of effective elastic properties of three-dimensional multiphase and multilayer braided composite. Regarding the multiscale characteristics of the composite, the microstructure modelling is carried out sequentially from fibre to tow scale. The geometrical configuration of the microstructure is first analysed, and mathematical relations among different geometrical parameters are derived on each scale. Second, effective elastic properties are ob… Show more

“…To calculate these elastic parameters, a variety of methods have been developed in recent years. The typical methods include the homogenization method [1,2], the finite element method [3][4][5][6], and the general method of cell [7][8][9], all of which require a representative volume element (RVE) [10] as an input. The most common RVE is the minimum periodic structure after simplifying the real microstructure of composite.…”

“…In comparison, the studies for 3-D MPML braided composite are limited and inadequate owing to the fact that MPML composite has just been developed in recent decades. The authors have published few works about the RVC microstructure modeling and finite element computation of the effective properties of MPML composite [18,19]. However due to the complex multi-layer microstructure and large heterogeneity of multi-phase materials, a detailed RVC finite element model usually involves hundreds thousands of elements http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.compstruct.2014.11.052 0263-8223/Ó 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
