Microstructure, mechanical properties and reciprocal dry sliding wear behaviour of as-cast and heat-treated TiN/Al-7Si functionally graded composite

Abstract: This work explores the effect of T6 heat-treatment on the microstructure, mechanical properties and dry sliding linear reciprocating wear behaviour of Al-7Si/Titanium Nitride (TiN) centrifugally cast functionally graded composite. The 10 wt% TiN particle addition and subsequent eutectic Si spheroidisation due to heat treatment revealed an improvement in microhardness, tensile strength and wear resistance of heat-treated composite when compared to as-cast composite. Reciprocating wear analysis at varying applie… Show more

“…There are many different types of metal matrix elements, however, aluminium is the predominant matrix material utilized because of its superior physical and mechanical qualities. B 4 C, SiC, TiN, TiO 2 , SiO 2 , ZrB 2 , TiC, and Al 2 O 3 113 are various reinforcing elements incorporated with metal matrix further to enhance their mechanical as well as wear properties. These alloys have a very low specific gravity and may be found in a variety of finished products owing to their application in the automotive and aerospace production sectors.…”

“…However, wear loss was enhanced by enhancing the sliding load and distance. J Radhakrishnan et al [17] reported that wear loss increased when enhancing the load, while friction coefficient decreased. Grooves pulled out of particles were seen in the morphological study of worn-out surface of Al-Si composite.…”
