“…It is interesting to note that, though X-ray diffraction data of various austenitic stainless steels show similar patterns, as shown in the present case, different authors have interpreted them differently. Thus, Samandi et al [15] and Mukerjee et al [5] attributed them to lattice expansion of the austenite phase, while Haen et al [16] attributed them to mixed nitrides such as FeN, γ′-Fe 4 N, Fe 4 N. To make it simple the peaks are identified in a general way as M X N. An M X N phase can, in turn, be attributed to any of the following three phases: γ′-FeN, Fe 4 N, FeNiN.…”

“…The profile depth exceeds the ion range at 40 keV, which is about 60 nm, and confirms the positive effect often observed with high temperature implantation for a PSII process. [1,3] Depending on temperature, the carbon implant profrles extend several microns into the samples, well beyond the ballistic range, and appear to be deeper than the nitrogen implants performed at similar temperatures. X P S analyses of ceramic coupons placed near the workpiece reveal a thin deposited carbon layer atop the implant that is graphitic with an approximately 15% concentration of the diamondlike carbon phase.…”
