Microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum 5083 weldments by gas tungsten arc and gas metal arc welding

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe mechanical properties and microstructural features of aluminum 5083 (Al5083) weldments processed by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) are investigated. Weldments processed by both methods are mechanically softer than the parent material Al5083, and could be potential sites for plastic localization. It is revealed that Al5083 weldments processed by GTAW are mechanical more reliable than those by GMAW. The former bears higher strength, more ductility, and no appa… Show more

“…They found that the tensile strength initially increased with the increase in tool rotational speed, welding speed, and axial force, but the tensile strength decreased after reaching a maximum value. Studies on the micro structure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded AA 5083 aluminum alloy showed that the decrease in friction heat flow results in the refinement of grain size, higher ductility, and better formability [12]. Aluminium alloy AA 5059 is a newly developed armor grade aluminum alloy which is mainly recommended in the ship hull and super structure due to its beneficial properties like high corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratio, formability, etc.…”

“…And the weldments processed by GTAW bear higher strength, more ductility and higher reliability than those processed by Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), there are no apparent microstructure defects in the weldments processed by GTAW [12].The efficient welding process can simplify product design and decrease the cost, it has important effect on the application of aluminum alloys. The microstructural characteristics of the welded joint are important in understanding the relation between welding process and properties of welded joint.…”

“…The application of magnesium alloys in automotive industry as alternatives to currently used steel-and aluminum-based automobile parts has gained increasing interests in the last decade for their competitive strength to density ratio and being more environmental friendly (Alves et al, 2001;Haferkamp et al, 2001;Kulekci, 2008;Liu et al, 2012;Luo, 2002;Wei and Anand, 2007). Unlike their counterparts, however, magnesium alloys are notorious for poor thermoplastic formability, a key factor limiting their wider application (Kim et al, 2008;Lee et al, 2008b).…”
