The plasma display panel (PDP) is largely attributed as a big screen flat display panel because of its fast response, wide viewing angle, low energy consumption, and some other advantages. The performance of commercially available PDP phosphors is not sufficient for practical applications, mainly due to instability in blue phosphors, poor color chromaticity in red phosphors, long decay time in green phosphors, and their low brightness. From the PDP point of view, the phosphor should have good luminescence efficiency as well as high color purity. Additionally, in PDPs, phosphors are excited by vacuum ultra violet (VUV) radiation, especially by 147 and 173 nm radiations from inert gas plasma, which shows the unique requirement for PDP phosphors -they can only be excited by the higher VUV excitations. The luminous efficiency and lifetime of plasma display panels (PDPs) are directly related to the performance of phosphors used in PDPs. As a result, higher efficiency, higher stability against high temperature processes, and a long lifetime along with good color chromaticity against vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation are major concerns in selecting suitable phosphors for PDPs. In order to achieve the same objectives, the present book chapter looks inside the development of the rare-earth based insulating nanocrystals to improve the performance of PDPs. These nanophosphors were studied for their luminescence properties under VUV excitations in view of their luminous efficiency, lifetime, higher stability against time, and high temperature processes as these properties

In this report, five systems of varied diameters viz. 62 nm, 85 nm, 115 nm, 160 nm and 450 nm of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ nanorods are prepared by solution combustion approach and with annealing at different temperature in reduced atmosphere (N2 + H2). An intense broad blue photoluminescence (PL), corresponding to the electronic transition of Eu2+ from the 4f 6 5d excited state to the 4f 7 ground state, is observed. The blue-shift and enhanced photoluminescence is also observed, and found to be highly dependent on the size of diameter of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ nanostructures. The change in decay time and color-coordinates with change in size of diameter of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ nanostructure have been analysed and thoroughly discussed
