Microstructure and Hardness of Friction Welded SSM 356 Aluminium Alloy

Abstract: SSM 356 aluminum alloys was obtained from a rheocasting technique named gas induced semi solid process has globular structure on base. The friction welding method conserve microstructure that is similar to the original structure of the base material a globular structure. It is also found that a rotational speed of 1750 RPM, burn of Length of 3.2 millimeters and welding time (upset time) of 30 second can produce a very good weld. The results of the investigation have shown that a have average hardness in the ra… Show more

“…However, this RFW method also has some limits for welding. For instance, welding workpiece with a complex shape can be very difficult, or workpiece length become shortened after welding [3]. These usually occur when welding workpiece at low melting point because the heat input from the welding place is not sufficient and the upset pressure while welding is not high enough.…”

“…On the other hand, the non-fusion welding or solid state welding is such that heat at the welding line has a temperature below the melting point of the material [1]. There are many methods of solid state welding such as friction stir welding [2], friction welding [3] and diffusion bonding [4] etc. Solid state welding results in a specimen without gas porosities after welding, [5] however, aluminium welding has the possibility of this problem occurring, especially, in the automotive industry which uses lightweight materials in the production of automobile parts.…”
