In dentistry, monolithic zirconia restorations have been preferred over all-ceramic restorations in recent years. Translucency is an aesthetic demand in dental restorations, and it can be identified with translucency parameter (TP). Zirconia thickness, Y 2 O 3 content, and sintering conditions are important parameters that influence the translucency of the restorations. It is crucial to investigate monolithic zirconia ceramics under different sintering regimes and reveal the critical parameters for dental restorations. The aim of this study was to determine the optical and microstructural behaviors of monolithic zirconia ceramics containing different amounts of yttria depending on various sintering regimes and thicknesses. Therefore, a conventional zirconia CopranZri (CZI) and two monolithic zirconia materials, CopraSupreme (CSP), CopraSmile (CSM) were used. Slow, normal, speed, and translucency sintering regimes with thicknesses of 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 mm were selected. TP of the specimens was calculated, and statistical analyses were performed by using one-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer post hoc tests. Characterization of the specimens was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques. The results showed that the effect of different sintering programs is more critical for CSP and CSM in terms of translucency variations and translucency program led to the most grain growth.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thickness change on the translucency of two recent monolithic zirconia dental ceramics used at different thicknesses. Materials and methods: A total of 60 disk-shaped specimens were prepared from two high-translucent tetragonal zirconia (Zolid ht+) and ultra-translucent cubic zirconia (Zolid fx), and divided equally into two groups according to material, each group with further subdivided into 3 subgroups according to thickness 0.5, 1, and 1.5 mm (n=10). A spectrophotometer was used to assess the CIE L*, a*, and b* for each thickness of the two zirconia ceramics. The Translucency Parameter (TP) was calculated. 1-way ANOVA and 2-way ANOVA statistical analysis of variance were performed (α=.05). Results. A statistically significant higher mean TP value was recorded with the ultra-translucent cubic zirconia group compared to that of high-translucent tetragonal zirconia regardless of thickness (P=0.008*< 0.05). Thickness had a significant effect on the translucency parameter of the two zirconia ceramics. Within group comparisons showed that for each of the two materials, the 0.5mm thickness recorded the statistically significant highest mean TP value, followed by the 1mm subgroup, whereas the statistically significant lowest mean TP value was recorded for the 1.5mm subgroup. Conclusions. Within the limitations of this study, it was found that material type and thickness had a significant effect on the translucency of high translucent monolithic zirconia.

Effect of Accelerated Aging on the Translucency of Monolithic Zirconia at Minimal Thickness

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of accelerated aging on the translucency of two monolithic zirconia ceramics used at their minimal thickness. Materials and methods: A total of 20 disc-shaped specimens (10x10x0.5 mm) were prepared from two zirconia blanks, high-translucent partially-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Zolid ht+) and ultratranslucent fully-stabilized cubic zirconia (Zolid fx), and divided into two groups (n=10). An integrating sphere reflective light recording spectrophotometer was used to assess the color parameters L*, a*, and b* before and after artificial accelerated aging for 5 hours in an autoclave at 134°C with 2 bar steam pressure. The Translucency Parameter (TP) was calculated based on TP=[(∆L*) 2 +(∆a*) 2 +(∆b*) 2 ] 1/2. The tests of homogeneity of variance, normality, and 1-way ANOVA statistical analysis of variance were performed by Graph Pad InStat software for windows (α=.05). Results: A statistically significant higher mean TP value was recorded with fully-stabilized cubic zirconia group compared to that of partially-stabilized tetragonal zirconia, both before (P=.003*˂.05) and after (P<.0001*<.05) accelerated aging. Artificial accelerated aging had a significant effect on the translucency of both fully-stabilized cubic zirconia (P=.0227*<.05) and partially-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (P=.023*<.05) increasing the mean TP value of both materials. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was found that accelerated aging had a significant effect on the translucency of both fully-stabilized cubic and partially-stabilized tetragonal monolithic zirconia, causing an increase in the mean TP value of both materials.
