“…Similar results were demonstrated in an in situ neutron diffraction study on a multifilamentary tape under 8% O 2 by Fahr et al [27]. They found, as had many authors [28,29], that initially the Bi2223 grains form near the silver interface where they form colonies of well-aligned grains. By increasing the annealing time, Bi2223 grains in the core of the filament appear which are characterized by an inferior degree of alignment.…”

“…The starting powder has been shown to greatly affect J c [6]. The fabrication of long Ag-Bi(2223) tape needs the manufacture of BiPbSrCaCuO powder with high homogeneity, ultrafine particles and low carbon content in large quantities [7]. The polymeric solution-solgel (SSG) process can realize molecular-level homogeneity in powder in principle, but cannot manufacture powder in large quantities, and, since there is more than one metallic cation involved in the SSG transition, some metallic salts are always preferentially saturated and precipitated out in the later period of SSG.…”

“…More importantly, though, melt processing has been shown to be highly effective at producing well textured material. In melt processed Bi2223 tapes, it is thought that a reaction at the Ag/oxide interface is responsible for the texture, although at present this is poorly understood [3].…”
