Microstrip Patch Strain Sensor Miniaturization Using Sierpinski Curve Fractal Geometry

Abstract: In this paper miniaturization of a microstrip patch strain sensor (MPSS) using fractal geometry was proposed and analyzed. For this purpose, the transducer of Sierpinski curve geometry was utilized and compared with the most commonly utilized rectangular resonator-based one. Both sensors were designed for the same resonant frequency value (2.725 GHz). This fact allows analysis of the influence of the patch (resonator) shape and size on the resonant frequency shift. This is very important as the sensors with th… Show more

“…In this type of sensor, the reflection coefficient as a function of frequency is monitored to determine the deformation based on the resonant frequency shifts. The sensors were fed in wired form [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 22 , 24 , 25 ] and wireless [ 15 , 21 , 23 ]. The first and most studied sensor geometry is the rectangular microstrip strain sensor [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 24 ].…”

“…As fractal antennas are known to be able to increase the bandwidth of antennas significantly, they have been investigated by researchers in the past [21]. For instance, fractal patch antennas have attracted a lot of attention [21][22][23]. Fractal DRAs have been investigated in the past as well [24][25][26].…”

“…A high frequency sensitivity means that only few samples are needed in the test process [7,[14][15][16][17]. The testing accuracy and resolution can be improved at the same time [18,19]. Therefore, lots of studies have focused on this research area.…”
