Microsponge as an Emerging Technique in Novel Drug Delivery System

Abstract: Numbers of developments are implemented in drug delivery system to achieve the goals of optimized efficacy, cost effectiveness of therapy. One of the latest, novel and highly evolving technologies is microsponge drug delivery system which gives controlled release and site specific delivery of active ingredients. They are highly cross linked, porous and polymeric microspheres with size range of 5-300µm. This system is emerging as valuable option for topical delivery of drugs due to characteristics like decrease… Show more

“…Microsponges have the potential to deliver a wide range of compounds in a regulated way, including antimicrobials, sunscreens, anti-acne, and antiinflammatory agents. 9 In order to minimize transdermal penetration into the body and maximize the amount of time an active substance is available on the skin's surface or in the epidermis, delivery methods are required. The only polymeric microspheres that satisfy these criteria are those based on microsponge technology.…”

“…In our previous works we presented the synthesis and physicochemical, functional, and biopharmaceutical characterization of diltiazem-loaded Eudragit RS microsponges [ 13 , 14 ]–a highly preferable drug-carrier system in solid as well as in semisolid dosage forms [ 15 , 16 ]. The microsponges were designated to serve as a controlled delivery system in diltiazem 2% rectal hydrogels.…”
