Malabsorption syndromes causing steatorrhoea are quite common in India. Estimation of faecal fat is an important non-invasive investigation, which provides vital information regarding the occurrence of malabsorption. The aim of this study was to estimate the fat excretion per day in stools of apparently healthy adults on an unrestricted diet in random spot stool samples using the Acid Steatocrit Method, which provides an alternate, simpler and yet reliable method of stool fat estimation. Several studies have proved the correlation of the acid steatocrit method with the conventional methods. In India, however, there has been no published data regarding the normal levels of fat in the stools, by the acid steatocrit method. We follow the normal range values, as set by the United States and the European countdes, not having a range for the Indian population. Hence, we took up a preliminary study, to estimate stool fat in a section of normal and healthy Indian population. The result obtained after screening 600 healthy and normal adults, showed the mean of stool fat to be 8.72 gms/24 hours, which is much higher than that, defined by Western literature (7 gms/24 hours). This can be accounted for, by the cultural and ethnic variations in dietary and food habits. Further studies are required in the same direction, involving larger population groups, and in different malabsorptive conditions.

Normal dışkılama özelliklerinin bilinmesi, normal ve anormal dışkılama arasındaki farkın ayırt edilerek gereksiz tetkik ve tedavi maliyetini azaltmasının yanı sıra ailelerin önemli boyutlara ulaşabilen kaygılarının giderilmesine de yardımcı olacaktır. Ailelerin polikliniğe geldikleri gün yapılandırılmış anket formları doldurulup, bebeklerin antropometrik ölçümleri kaydedilmiştir. Bebeklerin son 24 saat içinde yaptıklar dışkılar alınmıştır. Dışkılar renk, kıvam, pH ve steatokrit açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin analizi SPSS 15.0 ve SigmaStat 3.5 paket programında yapılmıştır. İstatistiksel karşılaştırmalarda p<0,05 değeri anlamlı kabul edilmiştir. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Bebeklerin %74'ü her gün dışkılıyordu. Stool number and patterns in children can show differences depending on factors such as age and feeding type. To know normal defecation patterns prevents unnecessary treatment via distinguishing normal defecation from abnormal and reduces health costs via informing parents who have serious concerns about this issue. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of breast feeding on defecation pattern of 0-6 months-old breast-fed infants. Fat malabsorption is an important cause of poor growth in infancy and childhood. Steatorrhea tests have been developed using various methods. Traditional measurements of stool fat, however, require large samples and it often takes as a week to complete the analysis. In this paper, a liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS) method was developed for simultaneous quantitative analysis of triacylglycerols, triolein, diolein and monoolein, in mouse feces. Moreover, the procedure was rapid, simple as well as compatible with LC-ESI/MS. Chloroform-isopropyl alcohol solution was used for fat-soluble sample extraction. After centrifugation and filtration, an analytical solution was prepared. Triolein, diolein and monoolein were separated using non-aqueous reversed-phase column with the mobile phase consisting of A (methanol) and B (acetone-isopropyl alcohol). The precision (% CV) and accuracy (% bias) of the assay were 3.8-14.7% and 85.2-114.9%, respectively. This method has been successfully applied to simultaneous determination of triolein, diolein and monoolein in feces from 30 mice. This method can therefore be applied to measure triacylglycerols in mouse feces accurately and precisely by LC-ESI/ MS, thereby helping to predictive biomarker in fat malabsorption and diagnostic research.
