Microscale Simulation on Mechanical Properties of Al/PTFE Composite Based on Real Microstructures

Abstract: A novel numerical method at the microscale for studying the mechanical behavior of an aluminum-particle-reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (Al/PTFE) composite is proposed and validated experimentally in this paper. Two types of 2D representative volume elements (RVEs), real microstructure-based and simulated microstructures, are established by following a series of image processing procedures and on a statistical basis considering the geometry and the distribution of particles and microvoids, respectively. Mor… Show more

“…To figure out the ignition detail, an “up‐and‐down” testing method was conducted by SHPB in an attempt to obtain the ignition threshold of reactive materials with different initial damages . By this method, once ignition occurred, the velocity of striker bar should be reduced in the next test; otherwise, the velocity should be raised.…”

“…An elevated temperature, typically between 375 and 385 °C, is used during consolidation to ensure the structural integrity . The methodology is refined in further work, for example, refs . The materials can be pressed to more than 99% of their theoretical maximum density (TMD), which is approximately 2.33 g cm −3 for the stoichiometric composition.…”

“…PTFE is a very attractive oxidizer thermodynamically, and the interest in metal‐PTFE composites as RSM has been maintained over the years. More recently, composites incorporating other metals, such as titanium, zirconium, tungsten, and others in addition to, or instead of aluminum were prepared and characterized …”
