“…A geographically distinct portion of the species range occurs on the Yucatán Peninsula (México), where at least two genetically distinct populations (King et al, 2005; King et al, 2015; Noreña‐Silva, 2019; García‐Enríquez et al, 2023; Zamora‐Bustillos et al, 2023; Noreña‐Silva et al, in review) persist along the western and north‐eastern coasts, respectively. Three spatial units were defined to account for variations in ecological features, potential genetic structure and threats on the Yucatán Peninsula.…”

“…The Northern Yucatán spatial unit also contains protected habitats, notably in the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, Yalahau Coastal Lagoon (Yum Balam Federal Wildlife Protection Area) and embayments in the Cabo Catoche Wetland System (Table 1). Genetic and tagging data indicate substantial gene flow between sites and migrations between embayments along the north‐western, northern, and eastern coasts and the continental shelf (Noreña‐Silva, 2019; García‐Enríquez et al, 2023; Zamora‐Bustillos et al, 2023; Noreña‐Silva et al, in review). The Eastern Yucatán spatial unit combines pristine habitats in the Chacmochuch Coastal Lagoon to the north and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve lagoon systems to the south with the highly developed Cancún (Nichupté Lagoon System) and Mayan Riviera regions in between (Table 1).…”
