MicroRNAs: Promising chemoresistance biomarkers in gastric cancer with diagnostic and therapeutic potential

Abstract: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth most common cancer worldwide and ranks second in global cancer mortality statistics. Perioperative chemotherapy plays an important role in the management and treatment of advanced stage disease. However, response to chemotherapy varies widely, with some patients presenting no or only minor response to treatment. Hence, chemotherapy resistance is a major clinical problem that impacts on outcome. Unfortunately, to date there are no reliable biomarkers available that predict resp… Show more

“…MicroRNAs (miRs), a class of small non-coding RNAs, have an inhibitory role in the regulation of gene expression by either inducing mRNA degradation or suppressing protein translation (3). Accumulating evidence has revealed that deregulations of miRNAs participate in the development and progression of human malignances, including gastric cancer (4)(5)(6). Recently, miR-101 has been found to act as a tumor suppressor in multiple types of malignant tumor, including hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, cervical cancer and lung cancer (7)(8)(9)(10)(11).…”

“…Different studies on breast cancer cell lines showed that five candidate predictive miRNAs from 249 miRNAs in a small discovery set of breast cancer specimens were analyzed by the expression profile in an independent series of 246 ER-positive primary breast tumors [91,92]. Inmultivariate analysis, higher expression of miR-30c was associated with benefit from first line tamoxifen monotherapy and longer progression-free survival [93,94]. Mostert et al, stated that cancer-initiating cells or CSCs were responsible for tumor development and progression.…”
