MicroRNAs in the pathobiology of sarcomas

Abstract: Sarcomas are a rare and heterogeneous group of tumors. The last decade has witnessed extensive efforts to understand the pathobiology of many aggressive sarcoma types. In parallel, we have also begun to unravel the complex gene regulation processes mediated by microRNAs (miRNAs) in sarcomas and other cancers, discovering that microRNAs have critical roles in the majority of both oncogenic and tumor suppressor signaling networks. Expression profiles and a greater understanding of the biologic roles of microRNAs… Show more

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in tumorigenesis and tumor growth associated with synovial sarcoma by deregulating cellular proteins or related pathways [ 17 ]. Dysregulation of miRNAs acts as the potential biomarkers of synovial sarcoma based on their association with malignant tumors [ 18 ].…”

“…An increasing number of ncRNAs, especially lncRNAs, were found to play crucial roles in the initiation and progression of rare cancers, suggesting that they could function as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets [ 14 , 15 ] ( Table 1 ).…”

“…Among sarcoma subtypes, miRNA profiling has been used to aid in tumor classification [ 18 21 ] and identify potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers [ 22 24 ]. While several miRNAs have been identified with tumor suppressive or oncogenic functions in a range of sarcomas [ 25 , 26 ], miRNA-mediated regulation of tumorigenic pathways in LMS has yet to be described.…”
