MicroRNAs and human diseases: diagnostic and therapeutic potential

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, non-coding small RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs are aberrantly expressed in various human diseases, ranging from cancer to cardiovascular hypertrophy. The expression profiles of the miRNAs clearly differentiate the normal from the pathological state and thus their potential as novel biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of several human diseases is immense. Emerging data on the role of miRNAs in … Show more

“…Over 1,000 miRNAs have been identified in the human genome. They bind to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of specific target genes and regulate expression of those genes by promoting degradation of transcribed mRNAs or inhibiting their translation (4,5). Several studies indicate that miRNAs are key regulators of cell growth and differentiation, carcinogenesis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammation (6)(7)(8)(9).…”

“…Intronic miRNAs share mutual promoters with genes wherein they are integrated. After being produced as a single transcript, an intronic miRNA is processed from introns sequences (8). Another category of RNA molecules is represented by miRNAs generated by entire intron sequences.…”
